Fisherman’s’ Bay, Lopez Island to Anacortes, Washington, July 1
As previously spoken about, tides are pretty drastic in the Pacific Northwest. To compensate for these tides, docks are constructed in such a manner to float up and down around pilings. Portions of the pilings are underwater part of a 24 hour period, and then exposed for another part. The submerged time period is enough for large barnacles to grow on the pilings and to live during the exposed period of time.

Facing another Rosario Strait crossing, and winds and currents favorable, we wanted to get an early start on the morning. I had gone up to use the restroom and was on my way back to the dock when I saw Chris lying on the pier. I ran to him and saw that his thumb and fleshy part of his palm were bleeding profusely. He had slipped getting off the boat and skinned himself very deeply on the barnacles. Having had similar injuries in the past, he knew it was critical to get the cuts thoroughly cleaned or they would get infected. He washed and washed and sent me looking for bandages and antiseptics. The boat had been organized and re-organized so many times, it took me a while to find the supplies.

With a couple of Tylenol's to ease the pain, we carefully made our way out of Fisherman’s Bay, and prepared to cross the straits. We were lucky this time. There were no freighters, fog or other ship traffic and we had an easy crossing with no further events. Chris, however, was in a great deal of discomfort.
We arrived at Skyline Marina and starting making preparations for our trip east. At the marina was a sweet boat with the same name as our son's...Free Spirit.
