Here we come San Carlos, Nov. 3
We had a great visit with our friends in Yuma and for the first time since last summer really enjoyed some warm sunny days. I was so hopeful this was what is was going to be like sailing in the Sea of Cortez. We enjoyed time at an incredibly warm swimming pool, watching some football and had the best BBQ chicken ever cooked by the guys. We spent some time provisioning for both our boat and the next leg of our journey and for their RV. It is so hard to say goodbye to good friends, especially when we don’t know when we’ll see them again.
We left only a half an hour late and needed to make a stop in Tucson to get our Visa’s printed, and a quick stop to Costco for some canned chicken for the trip. Landscaping is so different in Tucson than in the Northwest, I had to take a picture.

We were both a little nervous about driving to San Carlos. In the past roads have not been the best and protocol has been confusing. We crossed into Mexico at the Mariposa border crossing with virtually no incident. The customs guard did pull us over and asked to see the documentation on the boat. All was in good order and we were waved on. One of the two officials appeared to be in training and we think that may have been the reason we were stopped.
Chris speaks Italian extremely well, and there is a lot of crossover between Italian and Spanish. Also with the Spanish he learned from his students, he was able to communicate sufficiently when the Mexicans didn’t speak enough English to communicate with us. Please don’t misunderstand, it is incumbent on us to communicate with them, but I was really struck at the number of Mexicans who know enough English to make us lazy in learning their language.
The roads were better than expected; we got good directions for Google Maps before entering Mexico and we arrived in San Carlos safe and sound. Marina Secca was closed, but we parked along the driveway, unhitched the truck and went out for our first Mexican dinner.
